The Letter K

The letter K is found in position 11 of the modern Latin alphabet. The letter comes from the Semitic letter Kap, which symbolizes an open hand. The Greeks formed the modern K, and they call it 'Kappa'. K represents the sound /k/, but in English, C is almost always used for this sound instead.

The letter is also used as a word in English slang. The “’k” is commonly used instead of OK or okay. This is not something that you will be able to used in a game of scrabble, unless your set of rules allows slang words. When it comes to Morse code and “K” means over instead of writing the word over.

The letter K has slowly been replaced by the letter C in some situations. This is because the C has a softer sound. For example, Calendar used to be spelt as Kalendae.

K is commonly used after the letter C in words such as thicken or rickets. This is always something to think about when it comes to working on a game of scrabble.

The K is represented by only one tile in the Scrabble pouch, and it is quite valuable with a 5 point score awarded to it. With the affinity for C over K in the English language it can sometimes be a little tricky to place the K, but be alert and your chance will come around.
