Pros and Cons of an Online Writing Course

Online writing classes have become extremely popular for those looking into this form of business. Professional and novice writers may find benefits in taking one of these classes. There are many benefits to writing classes as they predominately use previous students to help with advice. However, there are drawbacks and they are not worth the money for everyone.

Meets Others Doing the Same as You

One of the biggest benefits to an online writing course is that there is the chance to meet other writers like you. This gives you the chance to share your experiences and learn about new writing opportunities. Building up contacts in this way is a great option. Your writer friends will be able to refer you if they find that they cannot do a piece of work and help promote your work and vice versa.

Gain Feedback from Your Peers

Constructive criticism is the best way to improve and the best way to gain that is through other freelance writers. This could be from others taking the course or from previous student and tutors. The problem with asking friends and family is that they will be biased or worried about hurting your feelings.

Gain Feedback Instantly

By taking an online course, it is possible to gain feedback instantly. This means that you can make changes sooner and get your work out there. By taking a physical course, you will have to wait for the next class a week later or for the mail to get there and arrive to you.

It Is an Online Course

However, online writing classes are just that – online. This type of studying does not work for everybody. Of course, if you are making the move to work online then studying online should be the next step. The problem is that course material needs to be printed if you want a hard copy, which costs money and the cost into the course may already be high.

It Depends on Other Students

While there are benefits to meeting other writers, it may not work for you. This depends on the other writers that are on the course – some simply prefer to stick to themselves and not share their knowledge or expertise. Some students may also drop out, which means that the number of critiques you get lowers significantly.

You may find that there an online writing course is worth the money that you spend. You may find that it all depends on the course and the students. The experience from one course does not necessarily mean another course will be the same. Take each one separately and put everything you have into it.
